General Overview of Electronic Publishing
We include the following background summary for
visitors who are not familiar with epublishing.
Johann Gutenberg's 15th Century invention of the
printing press has had a revolutionary effect on how information was
compiled and distributed since then. Today, with the world-wide
availability of PC's and the magic of the Internet, we are once
again facing a new publishing revolution.
The arrival of electronic publishing or the
electronic book (ebook).
The costs involved in conventional publishing
methods are extremely high and the percentage of authors whom
eventually succeed in having their works published,
disproportionately low.
The arrival of the ebook has drastically
cut the cost of publishing and dramatically increased the number of
successfully published authors.
The development of inexpensive epublishing software
now makes it possible for authors and other writers to self-publish
their own work, from home. The skills required are easy to learn and
most rewarding.
You do all the work… YOU keep MOST of the
profits!
In what format are ebooks published
and distributed?
Ebooks are published in a wide variety of formats.
The one choice of ebook publishers is the text or Adobe™ PDF format. This
form makes your ebook accessible to both PC and Mac users and only
accommodates text, clipart and (.jpeg, .gif) graphics. A free ebook reader (Acrobat) is
available online. The Adobe™ PDF format is suited to ebooks that contain
huge amounts of text. The publishing software is in the upper price
range (+/- $250.00).
The other option is to publish your ebook as an
HTML file. HTML is the computer language used to create Web pages.
Formatting your ebook by using HTML allows you to create a
multimedia production, with text, animated graphics, colour, photos,
audio and video. The HTML files are compiled into an executable
(.exe) file that is compatible with the Windows operating system and
is viewed with the Internet Explorer browser.
Given the versatility of the HTML format and that
by far the majority of computers, worldwide, are PC's (exclude
Macintosh) operating with Windows, it is easy to understand why this
format for the ebook is so popular.
The published ebook can be distributed by means of
the 1.44MB disk, CD-ROM, via e-mail or as a downloadable file from
your website. We will revisit packaging and distribution later on
when we deal with the advantages and benefits of
epublishing.
What types of books are suitable for electronic
publishing?
The ebook is extremely versatile, so you
can publish almost any type of book. However, given the multimedia
capabilities of the HTML format, books that include text with fancy
fonts, pictures and graphics etc, which can be enhanced with sound
are ideal candidates.
The following are but a few examples:
- children's books with pictures that can be enhanced with
animated graphics and sound.
- collections of poetry or short stories that can be presented
against a suitable background of mood setting colour and sound.
- catalogues, brochures and product promotional material will
come alive with the adding of multimedia elements such as sound;
screen size photos and even a short video clip. Your promotional
material can now be emailed to prospective customers. Now, that
is customer service! What's more, promotional material can be
updated almost as changes occur.
- technical and training manuals, educational books and similar
publications can also be enhanced with multimedia elements and
hold tremendous cost saving benefits for relevant institutions.
Built-in links and a search facility make the ebook a breeze to
navigate.
- business and self help books of the how to do this or that
variety are excellent examples of knowledge that can be converted
into an ebook.
- novels, fiction and non-fiction, the autobiography, in fact
almost any manuscript can be published as an ebook.
